Thoreau goes to the Y: A (very) brief excerpt from “Where I Lifted, What I Lifted for”

I went to the weights because I wished to lift deliberately, to flex, press, and curl only the essential fact of lead, and see if I could not plumb what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lifted.
